Bajaj has entered into a strategic partnership with Motosikal Dan Enjin Nasional, better known as Modenas. Based out of Malaysia, Modena manufactures a range of step-throughs and scooters.
This is not Modenas’ first attempt at a collaboration. The company entered into a venture with Taiwanese scooters giants, Kymco to introduce scooters in Malaysia. Having tasted success with this venture, the company is now looking at getting into motorcycles. The new venture will involve Modenas selling Bajaj motorcycle range in Malaysia as well as technology transfer between the two companies. Modena has a manufacturing facility in Kedah, Malaysia with a capacity of 1.3 lakh units per annum. This facility will have a dedicated hub to assemble motorcycles.
Modenas has also announced intentions to widen footprint to other ASEAN countries. While Bajaj has vehemently denied plans to develop new scooters under its own brand, there is a possibility that the company might introduce Modenas as a separate brand in India to sell scooters.
