Bajaj is continuing to test the Pulsar SS400 as the motorcycle has been spotted once again. Once launched, the Pulsar SS400 will be the largest capacity motorcycle in Bajaj’s line-up and hence, will be a crucial product for the company. Going by the number of times the Pulsar SS400 has been spotted, the motorcycle is undergoing very stringent testing and Bajaj seems to be taking no chance with it.
As seen in the Pulsar SS400 showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, the test mule featured an aggressively sculpted fuel tank and fairing, dual headlamps, clip-on handlebar and split seats. It also features upside down telescopic forks, monoshock and disc brakes both at the front and the rear. Considering the power figures it will return, ABS might also be offered as standard.
The Bajaj Pulsar SS400 will be powered by a 375cc engine borrowed from the KTM Duke 390, which will be reworked to give the SS400 its own unique character. Power figures are expected to be downsized to ensure that KTM sales aren’t affected or vice-versa. The four-valve liquid-cooled engine will be mated to a six-speed gearbox.
Over the years, the Pulsar motorcycles have been growing bigger and more powerful, catering to a wider range of customers. The Pulsar range is the cash cow for Bajaj and has helped the manufacturer build its image in India as well as other foreign markets. While other manufacturers are turning their focus to churning out new scooters, Bajaj has been adamant about sticking to motorcycles and the success of these ‘high-capacity’ motorcycles will be highly critical to help it regain the third spot in the market, which it recently lost to TVS Motors.
