The Bajaj Pulsar SS400 has been spotted undergoing high altitude testing at Rohtang Pass, near Manali. The Pulsar SS400 is an important motorcycle for Bajaj and the manufacturer seems to be taking a lot of effort to make sure it is perfect. The interesting thing in the spy picture however, is an undisguised Pulsar NS200 that is following the Pulsar SS400. Reports suggest that the Pulsar NS200 is an FI version being tested, though it is also possible that it is just being used as a benchmark vehicle.
The Pulsar SS400 will feature an aggressively sculpted fuel tank and fairing, dual headlamps, clip-on handlebar and split seats, which will also be shared with the Pulsar SS200. The bike also gets upside down telescopic forks, monoshock and disc brakes both at the front and rear. ABS might also be offered considering the power figures.
Bajaj has adopted the KTM Duke 390’s single-cylinder platform for the Pulsar SS400 and both the chassis as well as the 375cc engine have been been reworked to give the Pulsar SS400 its own unique character. The SS400 will produce less power than the Duke 390 which would help maintain a sizeable distance between the two as well as the RC390, which is also slated to be launched in this year. The four-valve liquid-cooled engine will be mated to a six-speed gearbox.
Since the Pulsar brand was introduced, the motorcycles have been growing bigger and more powerful, catering to a wider range of customer base. While other manufacturers are turning their focus on churning out new scooters, Bajaj has been concentrating solely on these ‘high-capacity’ motorcycles. Bajaj has always adopted a competitive pricing strategy for its motorcycles and we expect the same for the Pulsar SS400 and the Pulsar SS200 duo.
