Bajaj Auto has registered a 16 per cent drop in two-wheeler sales in January 2017. While January 2016 sales stood at 2.52 lakh units, the company managed to sell only 2.11 lakh motorcycles in the last month.
Of the total sales, Bajaj sold 1.19 motorcycles in the domestic market and shipped 92,021 motorcycles to overseas markets. These numbers are 15 per cent and 18 per cent lower than the corresponding period in 2016, respectively. Nevertheless, the company has managed to hold on to the fourth spot in the Indian two-wheeler industry, ahead of Royal Enfield.
The demand for motorcycles in the rural market, which form a big chunk of Bajaj’s target audience, witnessed a big drop with the announcement of demonetisation. While sales in urban areas have started recovering, the numbers in rural markets have failed to bounce back. However, we can expect Bajaj sales to get back to normal over the next couple of months.
