Bajaj will start handling the sales network of Triumph motorcycles in India by 2019. With this, the British marque’s reach across the country should increase to 400 dealerships.
With the announcement of their global alliance, Bajaj and Triumph revealed plans of developing a new middleweight platform in the next two years. A year before the launch of the new motorcycle, Bajaj will take over Triumph’s existing network as well as add new ones to the list. We expect the arrangement to be similar to the one with KTM and Kawasaki, where Bajaj Probiking dealerships used to take care of sales of three brands under one roof. As of now, Triumph has 14 dealerships spread across the country. With Bajaj taking over, the number is expected to touch 400. However, there is no word on whether the existing KTM service centres will be upgraded to meet reuqirements of Triumph motorcycles, or a new network will be set up for these.
Apart from India, Bajaj will also manage Triumph’s network in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Columbia and parts of Africa. Bajaj is planning to build a dedicated manufacturing unit in Chakan for the new model. While the segment is currently dominated by Royal Enfield, Bajaj will aim to carve out 20 to 30 per cent of the market share by 2020.
