What do you do when you stop making products that had built your company few years ago? You start creating new products and what do you do when these same products are threatened by your competitions? Do you go back making to the first product? Well, this is very difficult to answer but yes we are talking about the famous Hamara Bajaj.
The top honcho of Bajaj has made this clear that they won’t get into the scooter segment, ever, even after knowing the importance of these automatic two-wheelers on the balance sheet. During a recent interview with economic times, Rahul Bajaj, chairman of Bajaj Auto said that he has made his intentions clear to return to the scooter market, which once upon a time was dominated by Bajaj. However, Rajiv Bajaj wants to focus only on the motorcycles. The difference between the chairman and managing director is already public but who will win the scooter dilemma? Well, we need to wait for a few years because developing a product from scratch usually takes lot of time.
Bajaj has been losing its share to Honda and TVS over the last few years. Other than its Pulsar brand, its mass market commuter motorcycles aren’t really heating up the top three positions. But then again, KTM gives them lots of business (domesic and export sales) and Husqvarna is lined up for future. But scooters bring in lot of sales and revenue to the company, but will it be a costly affair for Bajaj to ignore this segment? Only time will tell.
