Bajaj Motorcycles is planning to set up a new manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. This new facility will be located close to its existing facility in Chakan. However, the work is expected to start only from 2016.
During a recent interview, Rajiv Bajaj, MD & CEO, Bajaj Motorcycles said that the current plant may fail to meet the consumer demand in the next 12-18 months. The company hasn’t mentioned anything about when the new plant will be operational, but said that it will have a production capacity of 50,000 units per month or six lakh units per year.
Currently, the Chakan plant manufactures the Pulsar, Avenger and the KTM range. We can expect the new plant to manufacture the future Pulsar and KTM models as it will be easy for the company to take care of its supply chain management.
We won’t be surprised if this new facility will be dedicated for KTMs because as per their future plans, all the KTM motorcycles will be manufactured by Bajaj in their Chakan facility and exported worldwide. And not just KTMs, the Husqvarna motorcycles will also be made in Chakan. So there is a high chance of Bajaj freeing up the current two assembly lines of KTM and moving it to the new plant. This will ease up Bajaj’s space and help them manufacture more Pulsar and Avenger bikes.
