The first set of motorcycles from the BajajTriumph partnership will be officially unveiled on 27 June. There will be two body styles, a naked street roadster and a street scrambler. While we are interested in testing both motorcycles, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Triumph Street Scrambler 400.
Design
The Triumph Street Scrambler 400 will draw styling inspiration from its iconic Bonneville range of motorcycles, which includes the Speed Twin 900. However, it is likely to receive some modern touches and the overall styling will be on the lines of a new retro Scrambler rather than a modern classic.
Spy pictures have revealed that the motorcycle will feature a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a round LED headlight, and an ever-so-slightly raked tail section. The styling is unmistakably Triumph, but what offers the ruggedness to the motorcycle is the beak-style front fender and the 19-inch front wheel.
Features and Hardware
Not much is known about the kind of equipment and features that will be offered on the Triumph Street Scrambler 400. However, it is safe to assume that the motorcycle could get LED lighting all around, a round digital instrument cluster with perhaps Bluetooth connectivity as well. Moreover, it could also feature ride-by-wire throttle and a switchable dual-channel ABS system.
Being a premium offering, we expect it to come with premium components as well. Spy images have revealed that the motorcycle will use offset-type upside-down forks, which should offer more suspension travel than its road-going sibling, while the rear will come with preload-adjustable mono-shock. It is also likely to feature radially mounted brakes with discs at both ends.
Engine Specifications
According to our sources, the Triumph Street Scrambler will come with two engine options – a 250cc motor and a 400cc unit. However, the India-spec model is initially likely to be offered only with the 400cc engine. Although power figures aren’t known yet, the liquid-cooled motor is likely to produce around 35-40bhp and a somewhat similar torque figure. What we do know is that the engine will be linked to a six-speed transmission, and an assist and slipper clutch is likely to be standard.
Launch date and Price
Just a few days ago, Bajaj Auto CEO, Mr. Rajiv Bajaj confirmed that the India-made Triumph motorcycles will make their global debut on 27 June 2023 at an event in London. Post the global unveiling, the Street Scrambler 400 and its road-going twin, the Triumph Street 400 are likely to be launched in India sometime around August-September 2023.
As for their pricing, we expect the Bajaj Triumph motorcycles to be positioned above KTM and command a slight premium. We can expect the naked roadster to get a sub-Rs. 3 lakh price tag, while the scrambler could cost a few thousand more.
Competition
Primarily, the Bajaj Triumph Street Scrambler 400 will rival the Royal Enfield Scram 411 and the Yezdi Scrambler. However, it will also face competition from the KTM 390 Duke and the BMW G 310 R.
