Bajaj has introduced the Urbanite sub-brand in India and unveiled the first electric scooter under this banner, the Chetak. With that name, the company has re-incarnated an iconic moniker which had helped Bajaj make its mark in the Indian market. After various speculations and spy pictures, now that the scooter is finally been revealed, we take a close look at it through this picture gallery.
The design of the first Urbanite scooter pays tribute to the Chetak of olden days with steel body panels boasting of smooth flowing lines across the body work.
It sports a circular headlamp cluster which houses a round LED DRL along with a horseshoe-shaped LED headlamp. It also gets a small ‘C’ insignia intricately nestled inside.
The rear panel clearly mimics the under-seat cowl of the old Chetak with a rounded, swooping design. This integrates compact LED tail lamps along with sequential scrolling LED turn indicators.
The Chetak also comprises of a closed glove box sitting flush inside the front apron, which is yet another retro-inspired addition.
The e-scooter is equipped with a long and wide seat which should be comfortable for the rider and pillion. Adding a premium appeal is the contrast-coloured stitching and a ‘C’ badge at the front.
On contrary to the retro styling, the Chetak is equipped a Bluetooth-enabled fully-digital instrument cluster which can linked to the rider’s smartphone through the Chetak app.
It rides on multi-spoke alloy wheels at both ends which are shod with 90/90-12 section MRF Zapper-K tyres. These are suspended by tubular single-sided fork up front and a cast aluminum swingarm at the rear.
Braking duties are handled by a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear, assisted by regenerative braking set up.
The Urbanite Chetak will go on sale from January 2020 and will be available in six colour options. It will go up against the Ather 450 in the premium electric scooter segment.
