- Bajaj Auto to launch its first electric two-wheeler in India
- Will be introduced under the Urbanite brand
Chakan-based Bajaj Auto has sent out an invite announcing the official launch of its all-new electric scooter on 16 October. To be launched under the ‘Urbanite’ brand, it will also be the company’s first electric scooter offering.
The company, as a manufacturer of two-wheeler vehicles, is acclaimed for the iconic Chetak moniker which brought Bajaj in the limelight. Now, with a tagline saying ‘Hamara Kal’ in the invite, it clearly confirms that the soon-to-be-launched electric scooter is likely to follow a similar ideology as the Chetak. Meanwhile, test mules of the scooter have been spotted on several occasions giving an idea of what one can expect once it is officially launched. Like other modern scooters, the Urbanite scooter will follow of contemporary design with subtle design highlights hinting of the Chetak. Besides that, expect the scooter to feature modern features like LED lighting and Bluetooth-enabled connectivity.
As for the powertrain, although there is no information available on the specification, it will indeed feature an all-electric platform. For cycle parts, the scooter will feature a single-sided front fork assembly (like the Chetak) and a monoshock at the rear. Braking duties will be handled by a disc-drum and all-drum setup. The e-scooter will ride on large 12-inch alloy wheels shod with road-biased tyres.
Expect Bajaj to peg the Urbanite e-scooter around the price bracket of 1 lakh thus undercutting the Ather 450 which currently retails at Rs 1.08 lakhs (ex-showroom).
