- New Chetak to get a hub-mounted motor
- Will also get a double-sided swingarm
- Features could be reduced
Bajaj is working on making its electric two-wheeler brand, the Chetak, more affordable and the company has started road testing the most affordable variant of the Chetak.
According to the spy shots, the prototype of the Chetak e-scooter was seen with a hub-mounted electric motor. As a result of this motor, the rear wheel is entirely covered with a plastic cover – something not seen on the current Chetak. The current model uses a mid-mounted motor equipped with multi-spoke alloy wheels. The spotted Chetak was also seen using a double-sided swingarm.
With these changes, it is clear that the Pune-based manufacturer is looking to introduce a more inexpensive version of the Chetak. Currently, the Chetak retails at Rs. 1.15 lakh (ex-showroom) and with an affordable model, Bajaj could be looking at a sub-Rs. 1 lakh price bracket.
Over the last few months, many brands introduced lower-spec models as the FAME incentives were drastically reduced. To keep their profits in check, most EV brands brought affordable models to help them sell vehicles in more significant numbers. It looks like Bajaj will also follow in their footsteps.
