If you were saving up money and dreaming of pulling off wheelies so long you’d run out of fuel before you run out of road, well, you’re out of luck. The next generation of big KTM Dukes won’t make it to India anytime soon.
As Amit Nandi, KTM India head, the Indian market isn’t ready for bikes like the 1290 Super Duke right now. One of the reasons is the current state of infrastructure in the country which isn’t friendly for powerful bikes. But rest assured, the Indian market will get the big Dukes when the time is right.
The company’s current focus is to build up the Duke brand in India which will help them in a big way at the time of the big Dukes’ launch. The company now sells three Dukes in India – the 200 Duke, 250 Duke and the 390 Duke. The 125 Duke won’t go on sale in India as there is no market for it.
A couple of years ago, KTM’s CEO, Stefan Pierer had said the same thing about the 1290 Super Duke launch. He said that this bike is too powerful for a country like India. However, he showed his interest in bringing the 1050 Adventure to India through the completely-knocked-down (CKD) route. This is something that hasn’t happened yet, but we’ve got our fingers crossed, considering the Ducati Multistrada is already here, and the entire BMW range will make it here officially this year.
