Bike manufacturers seek to expand into the sports bike segment
Bajaj Pulsar SS400

The Auto Expo 2014 gave us an idea about what motorcycle manufacturers from India and across the world are planning. The companies seriously think the motorcycles from the sports bike segment have a good future in our country and have been working on those lines.

Looking at the demand for premium motorcycles in the country, most companies have come to a decision that adding a few high end motorcycles to their line-up will definitely help them capture a good share in the Indian bike market and please the Indian consumers as well.

Hero HX250R

Aashiesh Agarwaal, Head (research), Edelweiss Financial Services, said, “In the past seven to eight years, the share of the premium segment has increased from 10 to 17 per cent in the industry. With improved road network and affordability, and with people upgrading to the powerful/leisure category, there exists a clear case of volume growth far superior than that in the mass market segment.”

The biggest players in our country, Bajaj and Hero displayed their contentious plans of storming the motorcycle market in the coming months. Bajaj exhibited the Pulsar CS400 and the SS400 at the Auto Expo, while Hero displayed their wide range of new and upgraded two-wheelers. This included the HX250R and the 620cc concept motorcycle, the Hastur.

K Srinivas, President (motorcycle business), Bajaj Auto, said, “We already enjoy a dominant market share in the segment and want it to grow. For us, Pulsar is the model that represents the sports segment and that’s where our new offerings are.”
