- BIS announces new standards for ISI helmets
- Maximum weight reduced to 1.2kgs from 1.5kgs
- Will be applicable from January 15, 2019
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced new standards for ISI certified helmets. As per this new ruling, the maximum weight of a motorcycle helmet will be 1.2kgs.
Until now, ISI marked helmets had a maximum weight of 1.5kgs. According to the transport ministry, the sale of non-standard helmets will become a criminal offence. The new helmets will also specify that these are meant for two-wheeler riders. So no more substitution of riding helmets with caps, cricket and industrial safety helmet while riding a motorcycle or scooter. The new helmets will have ventilation holes to make it airy and suitable for Indian climatic conditions.
These new rules need to be implemented from January 15, 2019, thus giving six months for helmet manufacturers to develop and test the new helmets. Presently, many helmets are sold on roadside and are known for their terrible quality and usability. This new ruling will definitely help the Indian buyers in terms of road safety.
