BMW has announced that the S1000XR will be priced at USD 16,350 (Rs 10.34 lakh), in the US market. The motorcycle was unveiled last month at the EICMA Show in Milan, Italy and targets an touring audience, rather than hardcore off-road enthusiasts.
To lend the motorcycle an adventure-bike look and an upright riding position, the S1000XR gets long suspension travel at both the ends and high set handlebars. It also gets a massive 20-litre fuel tank to reduce the number of fuel stops. Unlike adventure motorcycles, the S1000XR gets alloy wheels, which means that it is not meant for hardcore off roading.
The S1000XR has been built around a completely redesigned frame with a new swingarm and geometry. It borrow the S1000RR’s 999cc inline-four engine, though it has been detuned to produce 160bhp and 112.5Nm of torque and comes mated to a six-speed gearbox.
The electronics package of the S1000XR includes dynamic traction control, cornering ABS and switchable riding modes, to suit different kinds of weather and riding conditions. Customers can opt for a ‘touring package’ for USD 1,400 (Rs 88,553) which includes heated grips, center stand, luggage rack, cruise control and saddle bag mounts. The S1000XR is also available with a full-loaded premium package for USD 2,400 (Rs 1.51 lakh).
While BMW already has a dedicated adventure motorcycle in its line-up (the R1200GS), there existed a void in the fast growing adventure-touring segment. With the S1000XR, BMW plans widen the company’s audience and boost its volumes by eating into the share of the Ducati Multistrada 1200, Aprilia Caponord and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure.
