- Will be based on the BMW F850 GS
- Is the production version of BMW’s 9Cento concept
- Expected to be unveiled at this year’s EICMA
BMW has recently filed a new patent for the F850 RS which is its upcoming touring motorcycle. The patent was filed with National Institute of Industrial Property (INP) in Brazil on 2 April. To be based on BMW’s adventure tourer, the F850 GS, the F850 RS will be a road-biased model and it already appears to be in production-ready form in the patent image.
The motorcycle started creating a buzz on the internet with different names since its concept version was unveiled in May 2018 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Christened as 9Cento, the concept possessed a sharp and minimalistic design. This was followed by its production version being spied on test in November 2018 when it was expected to be called the BMW F850 GT. However, a dealer brochure, which surfaced on the internet in February this year, confirmed that it will be called the F850 RS.
As revealed in the patent image, the motorcycle has retained majority of the design cues of the 9Cento concept such as the twin headlamp set up, tall visor, angular fairing and upswept tail section. As for the engine, the F850 RS will share its powerplant with the F850 GS which gets an 853cc, twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor that churns out 93bhp and 92Nm. However, this unit might be retuned to suit the RS’ touring purpose. Moreover, it will also feature alloy wheels shod with road-baised tyres as opposed to the F850 GS’ spoke wheels and dual-purpose tyres.
The BMW F850 RS is expected to be unveiled in its full glory at this year’s EICMA show in Milan, Italy. Following its international launch, the company will also bring the motorcycle to the Indian shores.
