- New single-cylinder shift cam tech in the works
- Patent design leaked
- Can help to make the bike more fuel efficient
It seems that BMW could update its smallest roadster offering in India, the G 310 R with a major engine tweak in the future. New patent designs of a single-cylinder camshaft system have surfaced on the web and here’s what we know.
The shift cam concept has been used by the BMW S 1000 RR and a few of its other motorcycles for a while now. And the likelihood of its translating to the G 310 R makes sense. With the addition of this new tech, the camshaft is shifted laterally to give an added window for the combustion cycle. Moreover, it even prevents the uncombusted air-fuel mixture from entering the exhaust port.
Unlike the one BMW uses for its larger engines, this one’s a much more compact system that needs to be fitted in a smaller engine. BMW has positioned a solenoid right between the valves and this could translate to repositioning the spark plug at a certain angle. Moreover, the camshaft sliding also brings the need for an additional idle gear to connect the inlet and exhaust valves.
The new patent reveals that BMW is working specifically on a single-cylinder motor and its only offerings with such an engine are the 300cc triplets (G 310 R, G 310 GS, and the G 310 RR). Even the C 400 GT uses a similar motor, so it too could benefit from the same. However, it could be a while before we see the engine update on any of the small beemers.
