BMW Motorrad has announced its ambitious plans to increase its worldwide sales to two lakh units by 2020. The US and South East Asian markets will play an important role in helping the German manufacturer achieve this target.
While the existing model line-up has been returning satisfactory results, BMW Motorrad is expecting the new range of premium and mass market models to help it hit the magic number. The 2016 K1600B and the Heritage range are expected to drive the growth in the US, while the G310 range will be responsible for generating volumes in South East Asia.
The G310 platform will see two products – a streetfighter and adventure tourer, both of which are expected to go on sale in the next year. While BMW is already looked upon as an aspirational brand in these markets, its premium motorcycles are out of reach for a major chunk of the buyers. This is where the G310 range will step in. Manufactured at TVS’ plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the G310 models have been developed from the ground up to be competitively priced in their segment. These bikes are also expected to get a good response in Europe where learner motorcycles enjoy a good demand.
BMW Motorrad is looking at the US as its second biggest market in the next few years. In the US alone the company wants to double its market share to ten per cent in the next three years. Apart from rolling out products targeted at American buyers, BMW Motorrad has also announced plans to add 50 new dealerships by 2020. Worldwide, the total number of BMW Motorrad touch points is pegged to reach 1,500 around the same time.
