BMW Motorrad has issued a recall for the R nineT in a few international markets. The recall covers 3,368 motorcycles manufactured between 2014 and 2017, to fix an issue with swingarm pivot pin bolt.
In the affected motorcycles, the swingarm pivot pin bolt may loosen itself due to an issue in the production process. One or more bolts that connect the right-side pivot pin to the frame may loosen due to improper specification used by the supplier of pivot bolt. Due to this, proper clamp force may not have been achieved during final torqueing process at the production line. In case the pivot pin bolt loosens itself, the handling and stability of the motorcycle might be affected and can eventually lead to a crash.
BMW Motorrad dealers have started notifying R nineT owners about the recall, and the rectifying process is expected to begin on 9 October 2017. The dealers will re-install the pivot bolts on the affected bikes free of charge. We are awaiting a comment from BMW Motorrad India on whether the motorcycles sold in India are also covered under this recall.
