The BMW Motorrad has confirmed via its social media channels that the new R18 will be launched in the Indian market on 19 September 2020. The heritage-series motorcycle will rival Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle products in the country. Here we tell you what to expect from the upcoming new BMW R18.
Design
The new R18 draws styling cues from the 1965 BMW R5. Thus, the R18 features a similar design for the fuel tank, swingarm, exhaust, and exposed shaft-drive. Internationally, the R18 is available in two trims – a completely blacked out version and a ‘First Edition’ with more chrome and white pinstripes. While the details are scarce, we could see both variants in the Indian market.
Engine
The R18 uses a 1,802cc, air-cooled, boxer-twin engine that makes 91bhp of maximum power at 4,750rpm and 158Nm of peak torque at 3,000rpm. The motor is paired to a six-speed transmission.
Electronics
The safety net on the BMW R18 includes ABS, stability control, hill-hold assist, and three ride modes – Rain, Rock, and Roll. The bike also gets heated grips and a reverse gear as optional extras.
Hardware
The suspension setup comprises of telescopic forks at the front and steel swingarm with central shock strut at the back. Anchoring power comes from dual 300mm discs at the front and a single 300mm rotor at the back.
Price
Expect the BMW R18 to be priced close to Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom India). The Bavarian cruiser will rival products from Indian Motorcycle, Harley-Davidson, Ducati Diavel 1260 and the Triumph Rocket 3 in India.
