- BMW R18 India launch next week
- Styling inspired by 1965 R5
- Likely to cost Rs 20 lakh
The BMW R18 was spotted in India last month with speculations that it will be launched in September. Now, according to a few dealers, the motorcycle is scheduled to debut on 19 September.
The R18 is BMW’s answer to Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle which currently have a major share in the traditional cruiser segment. It draws its styling inspiration from the 1965 BMW R5 with similar designs for the tank, swingarm, exhaust, and exposed shaft-drive. BMW is offering the R18 in two trims internationally- a completely blacked out version and a ‘First Edition’ with more chrome and white pinstripes.
The 1802cc engine that powers the R18 is the largest boxer-twin motor ever built by BMW. It is capable of producing 91bhp and 157Nm and comes mated to a shaft drive. As for features, the motorcycle comes with ABS, stability control as well as three ride modes- Rain, Rock, and Roll. It also gets a hill-hold assist, heated grips, and a reverse gear as options.
We can expect BMW to price the R18 around Rs 20 lakh, ex-showroom. Apart from Indian’s and Harley’s offerings, the BMW R18 will also face competition from the Ducati Diavel 1260 and the recently launched Triumph Rocket 3 GT in India.
