BMW Motorrad has expanded its product portfolio in the Indian market with the launch of the new S1000R BS6. The litre-class naked roadster will compete against the likes of Ducati Streetfighter V4 and the Kawasaki Z H2 in the Indian market. Here we bring you the top five highlights of the new BMW S1000R BS6.
Design
Similar to its fully-faired sibling, the S1000RR, the latest iteration of the S1000R gets a complete makeover for 2021. The updated front fascia, for example, drops the asymmetric styling theme and uses an all-new LED headlight that resembles the units on the 2021 BMW G310R and the F900R. Apart from the new front fascia, the 2021 model also gets a sharper design for the fuel tank side panels, tank centre cover, side panels in R shape, radiator shrouds, and the belly pan. At the back, the naked roadster uses the S1000RR inspired tail-end. The underpinnings, too, are based on the S1000RR.
Features
Apart from the styling, BMW Motorrad has also overhauled the feature list on the S1000R. The naked roadster now comes with full-LED lighting as standard. The cockpit, too, receives an upgrade, and the S1000R now uses a modern, Bluetooth-enabled 6.5-inch TFT display instead of the semi-digital unit on its predecessor.
The electronic rider aids include three riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), anti-hopping clutch, traction control system, ABS Pro, and Hill Start Control as standard. Additional features such as Riding Modes Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), engine drag torque control MSR, engine brake control, and Power Wheelie control are available on the Pro and Pro M Sport variants.
The premium variants also benefit from features such as keyless ride, USB charger, heated grips, cruise control, gear-shift assist, adaptive lights, and daytime running lights. The fully-loaded Pro M Sport version further benefits from M endurance chain, M GPS lap trigger, sports silencer, M sport seat, lightweight battery, and carbon wheels.
Variants and Colours
The S1000R will be sold in three variants – Standard (Rs 17.90 lakh), Pro (Rs 19.75 lakh), and Pro M Sport (Rs 22.50 lakh). BMW Motorrad will offer three colours for the motorcycle – Racing Red, Hockenheim Silver Metallic, and Light White/M Motorsport (only with Pro M Sport).
Engine
The mechanical specifications retain the 999cc, inline-four, liquid-cooled setup. The Euro5/BS6-compliant motor produces 165bhp of power at 11,000rpm and 114Nm of peak torque at 9,250rpm. BMW Motorrad claims that nearly 90Nm of the peak torque is available from 5,500rpm to 12,000rpm. The engine is linked to a six-speed gearbox. The claimed fuel economy stands at 6.2-litre/100km or 16.12kmpl.
Hardware
The hardware on the 2021 S1000R includes 45mm upside-down front forks and a mono-shock at the back to perform the suspension tasks. The anchoring power comes from 320mm twin discs with four-piston callipers at the front and a single 220mm rotor with a single-piston calliper at the rear. The standard model tips the weighing scale at 199kg while the Pro M Sport variant is 194kg heavy.
