BMW Motorrad India has confirmed that the new, BS6-compliant S1000R naked roadster will reach our market very soon. The motorcycle will rival the likes of Ducati Streetfighter V4 series and the Kawasaki Z H2 range in the Indian market. The new BMW S1000R is already available in the international markets, and the India-spec model will be similar to the version sold overseas. Here we tell you what to expect from the India-bound BMW S1000R BS6.
Design
The S1000R has received a major makeover during the Euro5/BS6 upgrade. The biggest change is visible at the front where the motorcycle uses an all-new LED headlight setup that replaces the asymmetric unit of the old model. The design of the headlight resembles the unit on the 2021 BMW G310R and the F900R. The new model also packs a sharper styling through the use of a redesigned fuel tank, radiator shrouds, and belly pan. The tail-end of the S1000R is inspired by the company’s flagship supersport model, the S1000RR. Apart from the styling cues at the rear, the frame and swingarm on the S1000R, too, are based on the S1000RR.
Features
The 2021 BMW S1000R benefits from full-LED lighting as standard while the Headlight Pro with adaptive turning light and the iconic light guides with daytime running light function will be available as optional extras. The cockpit receives an upgrade in the form of a Bluetooth-enabled 6.5-inch TFT screen that replaces the semi-digital unit on the old model. The electronic rider aids include three riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), traction control system, ABS Pro, and Hill Start Control as standard. Additional features such as Riding Modes Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), engine drag torque control MSR, engine brake control, and Power Wheelie control are available as optional extras.
Engine
The Euro5/BS6-compliant S1000R roadster continues to use a 999cc, inline-four, liquid-cooled motor that makes 165bhp of maximum power at 11,000rpm and 114Nm of peak torque at 9,250rpm. The company claims that nearly 90Nm of the torque is available from 5,500rpm to 12,000 rpm. The six-speed gearbox can be further improved with the optional Shift Assistant Pro bidirectional quickshifter. The company claims a fuel economy of 6.2-litre/100km or 16.12kmpl.
Hardware
The suspension setup on the 2021 model includes 45mm upside-down front forks and a mono-shock at the back. The braking tasks are handled by 320mm twin discs with four-piston callipers at the front and a single 220mm rotor with a single-piston calliper at the rear.
Expected price
The BS6-compliant S1000R is expected to carry a price premium over its predecessor, and we expect the new model to arrive in the Rs 17-18 lakh range. The old model, for reference, was sold at Rs 16.70 lakh.
