The BMW S1000R has been launched in India at Rs 22.83 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The bike will be sold in India through BMW’s official importers via the completely-built-up (CBU) route.
The S1000R is the naked-street fighter version of the S1000RR supersport motorcycle. It was first unveiled at the 2013 EICMA and carries most of the design cues from its fully-faired version. The naked version gets differently designed asymmetrical dual headlights making it look very aggressive.
The S1000R is powered by a 999cc inline-four engine that powers the S1000RR. However, the power has been reduced by 30bhp to 160bhp at 11000rpm. The torque, however, has been increased by 9Nm at 9250rpm to deliver low-end and mid-range torque. The S1000R gets the race ABS, automatic stability control (ASC) and dual-riding modes (road & rain), with dynamic traction control (DTC) as an add-on feature. The BMW dynamic damping control (DDC) is optional making it the first motorcycle in its segment to feature this technology.
The BMW S1000R is available in India in three colour options – red, blue and white. The bookings have begun and the waiting periods may go upto a month, depending on the colour. The BMW S1000R competes with the Kawasaki Z1000 in the Indian market. The latter is priced at Rs 12.50 lakh (ex-showroom Pune) which is almost half the price of the S1000R, making it the best buy.
