BMW Motorrad’s sports touring motorcycle will move into a new generation for 2019. On the surface, the test mule might not look much different than the current R 1200 RT, but reports suggest that it features several technological upgrades.
A closer look at the test mule shows that the boxer engine features a redesigned cam cover and exhaust manifolds, which hint at an upgrade for the powertrain. Besides, the motorcycle gets a TFT display in the instrument console. There aren’t any other visual upgrades, although this could be done to hide the test mule in plain sight. We expect the new model to be showcased at the EICMA Show, later this year.
Given that the current generation bike has been on sale since 2005, barring a few visual upgrades, it would be fair to say that the R 1200 RT is now due for a generation change. Reports suggest that BMW will adopt variable valve technology for its new generation R 1200 RT, along with a bump in displacement. As the current R 1200 RT is a successor of the R 1150 RT, which in turn succeeded the R 1100 RT, the next model can be expected to be christened as the R 1250 RT.
