The folks at Munich have finally spoken about their much awaited launches. BMW Motorrad will launch the G310R and the G310GS in India in the second half of 2018.
This makes us believe that these small BMWs will hit the Indian market during the festive season next year. The G310R was unveiled to the world at 2015 EICMA show as made in India, but for the rest of the world. So it is sad to see that this motorcycle will hit the Indian shores a whole three years after it was officially unveiled. The G310GS, an entry-level adventure motorcycle built on the G310R platform that was revealed last year, will also make its India debut next year.
Both the bikes were originally supposed to have been launched in the country a few months ago. The German manufacturer, however, refused to offer an explanation for the delay, but it did talk about its intention to give Indian customers a world class buying and service experience. Currently, BMW Motorrad sells most of its big bikes in India, from BMW R1200R to the big daddy, the BMW K1600GTL. All these are imported as completely-built-up(CBU) units which attract hefty price tag. But the German manufacturer has managed to price some of the bikes, like their highest selling R1200GS, pretty well.
We believe that BMW is waiting to add more dealers before introducing the 300cc BMWs to India. This will help them cater to a wider audience base and help them get good volumes. Currently, G310R’s rival, the KTM 390 Duke has been enjoying good attention from Indian buyers due to its competitive pricing, performance and features. It will be interesting to see how BMW prices its naked 300cc in the country.
