- BMW working on carbon fibre chassis
- Swingarm integrated into main frame
- New HP4 likely to get this tech
BMW Motorrad used an extremely expensive carbon fibre chassis on the HP4 race –a track only motorcycle. But it is planning to take things to a whole new level as it’s working on a unique frame.
According to new filed patents, BMW Mottorad is planning to integrate swingarm into the main chassis. And this is being done by using lots of carbon fibre bits. This unique metal can be made to be rigid in one direction and flexible in another. This allows the swingarm that bends to absorb bumps but remains stiff laterally. Through this approach, the motorcycle wouldn’t need a swingarm pivot.
The German bike maker hasn’t revealed if this technology will make its way to any motorcycles, but we believe the next generation HP4 is likely to get it. And when it does, expect BMW to ask for a lot of money.
