- BS6 fuel to be available in India today
- Delhi running on BS6 petrol, diesel since a year
The petrol pumps across India will start supplying Bharat Stage 6 fuel from today. This is the first time India has skipped a stage and leapfrogged from BS4 to BS6, making it one of the best achievements in the oil industry.
While the deadline for BS6 fuel was April 1, 2020, a lot of petrol pumps across the country started selling BS6 fuels about 10-12 days ago. In fact, New Delhi has been running on BS6 fuel for about a year now, whereas the National Capital Region (NCR) switched in October last year. However, some petrol pumps might not be able to supply BS6 fuel due to the current lockdown.
The BS6 fuel is expected to reduce NOx emission from BS6 petrol engines by 25 per cent and 70 per cent in diesel cars. The new fuel contains just 10 parts per million of sulphur, making it one of the cleanest fuels available.
In other news, the Supreme Court of India allowed only 10 per cent of unsold stock of BS4 vehicles to be sold and registered within 10 days post lockdown. This development is bound to affect the automotive industry which had a tough year due to poor sales. While a few brands like Hero MotoCorp has decided to take back all the unsold stocks, other brands are yet to take a call on that.
