Months before the new emission norms become operational (from 1 April 2020), Hero MotoCorp has already launched its first BS-VI motorcycle, the new Splendor iSmart. Besides the new fuel-injected motor, the 110cc commuter gets various updates to its cycle parts and features as well. In that case, we take an elaborated look at the updates the new Splendor has received.
New Fuel-injected engine
In order to adhere with the upcoming emission norms, the carbureted motor of its predecessor has been replaced by an all-new fuel-injected mill. This 110cc, single-cylinder unit produces 9bhp at 7,500rpm and 9.89Nm at 5,500rpm, which is a hike of 0.89Nm over the previous motor. Hero says it has been tuned to generate 10 per cent more torque throughout the rev range while delivering better fuel-efficiency. Notably, the motorcycle continues to feature Hero’s i3S start-stop technology which further aids in saving fuel.
Revised cycle parts and geometry
Hero has done a couple of changes to the hardware of the motorcycle with an aim to improve comfort and stability. The new Splendor is based on a new diamond chassis, as opposed to the double-cradle frame of the outgoing model. For taking on bad roads more efficiently, it gets longer travel suspension which is up by 15mm along with a higher ground clearance of 180mm, an increment of 15mm. Furthermore, the wheelbase has also been elongated by 36mm to 1281mm for better stability.
Added features
While the Splendor iSmart continues to be equipped with a conventional headlamp, it is brighter now for better illumination. The motorcycle also features a larger fuel tank for a longer range as the capacity has increased by one-litre and now stands at 9.5-litres. Yet another update is the availability of a front disc brake as an option, which the BS-IV version missed out on.
Refreshed styling
While the new Splendor retains the overall design theme of the previous model, it gets subtle changes on the body panels. This includes a larger bikini fairing, beefier fuel tank and wider underseat cowl along with restyled pillion grab rails. The single-piece seat has also been tweaked for an added comfort. Lastly, the changes are complete with a refreshed set of decals.
Pricing
All the aforementioned updates have brought along a significant price hike. The BS-VI Splendor iSmart is around Rs 8,000 more expensive over the BS-IV variant as it retails at Rs 64,900 (ex-showroom, Delhi). That makes it the most expensive offering in its segment. However, all the motorcycles, including other brands, will receive a corresponding price hike along with the BS-VI update. Hero has commenced the deliveries of the new Splendor in Delhi and other regions will get the motorcycle soon, in a phased manner.
