BMW decided to showcase their cutting-edge tech at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show. They displayed their 1000-times-more-powerful laser headlights for motorcycles and a helmet with head-up display which shows all the vital statistics while riding.
BMW already use the laser headlight technology on the 7 series and i8 car models. They have adopted the headlight to be used on a motorcycle, namely the K1600GTL. They claim the high-beam will be able to light up a range of 600 metres in bright white light. BMW also says that the laser modules come with a long life while consuming less energy. It costs Rs 6.8 lakh to option in these futuristic headlights on their cars, it is unsure how it will be priced on their motorcycles.
The helmet HUD unit ensures that riders never need to take their eyes off the road. The rider can control the displays of current speed, selected gear, tyre-pressure, oil and fuel level, even speed limits, and the system displays. A front-mounted camera will record the journey, similar to the function of a dash-camera in a car. Furthermore, the rear-mounted camera will simulate a rear-view mirror. BMW Motorrad want to develop this innovative technology to a production level within the next few years.
