There used to be a time when safety features weren't a priority among India auto manufacturers. But times have changed and a lot of them have started offering safety features in almost all their vehicles.
Continental – one of the biggest suppliers of safety systems has announced that it’ll localise the production of ABS and ESC in India. This development was a result of growing consumption of vehicle variants with safety features. The ABS systems for two-wheelers will also be produced at the company’s facility in Gurgaon, along with the production of ABS and ESC for passenger vehicles. Continental also wants to produce the electronic control unit (ECU) in India, but this would be possible only by 2018 at their Bangalore facility.
The company is targeting the delivery of its first localised ABS and ESC products for India to an undisclosed vehicle manufacturerby the end of 2016. This move was also a result of a recent draft notification from the Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This rule mandates that new two-wheeler models with an engine capacity exceeding 125cc manufactured from April 1, 2017 onwards need to be equipped with anti-lock braking systems and all existing two-wheeler models exceeding 125cc need to be equipped with anti-lock braking systems from April 1, 2018.
