The year-long wait to see some of the most thrilling actions on two wheels is about to end as the 2019 Dakar Rally is all set to be flagged off tomorrow. This will be the 41st edition of what is perceived to be the most daunting rally of all. To be hosted by Peru, the riders will be covering 5,000km in ten stages starting from 6 January to 17 January.
Notably, this year will be the first time that the rally will take place only within a single country – Peru. The riders will kickstart their grueling journey from the capital Lima, and pass through Pisco, San Juan de Marcona, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna before concluding at the starting point in Lima. The 5,000km race course majorly consists of sand dunes, 3,000km to be precise. The riders will navigate their way through the course while hustling to cover the distance as fast as they can.
The Dakar Rally comprises of various categories for different type of vehicles such as motorcycles, cars, ATVs, buggies and trucks. In total, 534 racers across categories will be competing this year and 135 of them will be making their debut. The 41st edition has also seen the highest participation of women with 135 female racers registering for the rally.
Among the various teams competing in the motorcycle category, Sherco TVS Racing and Hero MotoSports are the two teams from India that are ready with their riders. While the former has Michael Metge, Adrien Metge, Lorenzo Santolino and Aravind KP, the latter’s line-up consists of CS Santosh, Oriel Mena and Joaquim Rodrigues.
