Diesel vehicles over 10 years old banned in Delhi

Delhi is one of the worst affected cities when it comes to pollution. While the government has not been doing much to give a better life to its citizens, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an order to ban all the diesel vehicles which are more than 10 years old.

This order applies to Delhi’s neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as well. Last year, the NGT had ordered a ban on diesel vehicles which were more than 15 years old. However, the states failed to act on it. As per this new order, the outside state vehicles which are older than 10 years old are also not allowed to come inside the state. The NGT has also asked the state to set up pollution check booths at the borders to check vehicles entering the area for emissions and overloading.

“No diesel vehicles, light or heavy over 10 years will be allowed to operate in Delhi- NCR. All registering authorities in Haryana, UP and Delhi would file a list of petrol vehicles more than 15 years old and diesel vehicles more than 10 years old before the tribunal and provide the same to the state police," said Justice Swatanter Kumar, chairperson, NGT.  

We welcome this move made by the National Green Tribunal. It will not only decrease the overall pollution levels, but will also encourage more states to follow suit.
