The BMW R Nine T is classic BMW motorcycle heritage packed into modern day machinery. The classic street motorcycle got an adventure treatment for EICMA 2016 in the form of the BMW Lac Rose Concept and we loved it. And the latest news of this concept going into production as the 2017 R Nine T Urban GS has already had us planning for a savings fund.
The BMW R Nine T runs on an 1170cc air-cooled boxer engine that looks straight out of the 60s but runs modern internals that give you 110bhp of power on the tap. While peak power is developed at 7550rpm, it delivers a peak torque of 119Nm at 6000rpm and is mated to a six-speed gearbox through a dry clutch.
The R Nine T Urban GS inherits this meaty engine and the modern frame along with the signature shaft drive. The upside down shocks have made way for traditional telescopic forks with more travel for off-road purposes. The front fender goes flying, tucked under a retro round headlamp cowl.
It gets the customary knobby tyres on spoked rims and the thin spokes look dapper. It runs a 19-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel to complete the ‘enduro’ look. It will get its share of electronics starting with ABS and riding modes. We hope it comes to India after its global debut but knowing BMW, the R Nine T Urban GS would cost us both our kidneys, liver and probably the heart as well.
