EICMA 2017: Yamaha reveals updated YZF-R1 and R1M for 2018

Yamaha has revealed their flagship superbikes; the YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M for 2018. Both bikes get an upgraded electronic package and new colour schemes. However, both bikes continue to use the 998cc crossplane four-cylinder engine that produces 197bhp and 112Nm of torque.

The YZF-R1 gets an updated Quick Shift System (QSS) which now also allows clutch less downshifting. The bike retains the existing extensive electronic package that consists of a banking sensitive traction control, slide control, front lift control, launch control, banking sensitive race ABS, 6-axis IMU and a unified braking system. The 2018 YZF-R1 will sport a new ‘Race Blu’ colour scheme.

The YZF-R1M is an evolution of the formidable R1 and Yamaha has made it even better for 2018. The bike gets the highest-spec Ohlins suspension system- the Smart EC 2ERS. The system analyses data from the bike’s six-axis IMU and makes adjustments to the forks and monoshock settings during acceleration, braking and cornering.

It also gets the updated QSS like that on the standard bike. The YZF-R1M features a revised ECU settings that have upgraded the bike’s lift control system which prevents unwanted front-end lift during acceleration. For 2018, the bike also features a ‘Silver Blu Carbon’ colour scheme that shows off more of the carbon on the fairing.
