- EV two-wheelers sales grew by 21 per cent
- 90 per cent sales comes from low-speed scooters
- More brands are launching high-speed versions
The electric two-wheeler segment has reported a growth of approximately 21 per cent in the last financial year. The segment saw sales of 1.52 lakh electric two-wheeler as against 1.26 lakh units in FY2019.
According to the report released by Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), 97 per cent of the sales come from electric scooters, whereas the rest 3 per cent is from electric motorcycles. Interestingly, out of the total 97 per cent e-scooters, 90 per cent of the overall sales comes from scooters that has a maximum speed of 25kmph. These scooters doesn’t need registration from any state, nor the riders need licence to ride it.
Currently, the low-speed electric scooter market is dominated by brands like Hero Electric. There are other brands like Yo Electric and Ampere that also sells such scooters. In fact, most of the brands are now launching high-speed electric scooter due to concession provided by the government of India. That segment is currently dominated by Ather and the recently launched scooters like the Bajaj Chetak and the TVS iQube.
