- 54,800 electric two-wheelers were sold this fiscal year
- The figure stood at 23,000 units during FY 2016-17
- Sales grew by 138 per cent this year
Electric two-wheeler sales have seen a considerable rise during FY 2017-18 in India and it has nearly doubled compared to the sales in the previous financial year. All the companies collectively sold 54,800 units of electric two-wheelers this fiscal year contrary to the sales of 23,000 units in FY 2016-17.
Owing to the growing demand and sales of electric two-wheelers in India, more and more manufacturers are venturing into this territory and are trying to modernise their products. The latest example of this is the use of lithium-ion battery which not only improves the performance of electric two-wheelers but also delivers better range. Okinawa Ridge+ is the recently launched electric scooter in India which comes equipped with lithium-ion battery and has a claimed range of 120 kms.
Apart from Okinawa, Ather Energy is yet another electric two-wheeler start-up which is eyeing at grabbing a slice of this flourishing market. It has two electric scooters in its portfolio including the Ather 340 and Ather 450 and, deliveries of the latter have recently commenced.
In order to curb the ever-rising pollution, the Indian government is encouraging manufacturers and buyers to turn towards a greener way of commute. Hero Electric, Okinawa, Ather Energy, Twenty Two Motors and Tork Motors are some of the manufacturers who offer electric two-wheelers in India.
