India has become the first country to get a ‘motorcycle mode’ feature in Google Maps.
For those who have been living in a cave and can’t connect with what Google Maps means, it is a navigation app for smart phones compatible with Android, iOS and Blackberry OS. The app offers street maps and route planning along with a slew of other functions. While the route planning was limited to cars, walking and public transport until now, Google has now added motorcycles to this list. The mode works to find the most efficient routes possible for a motorcyclist, accommodating for road closures on the route.
India overtook China to become the world's leading motorcycle and scooter market last year, which makes it an ideal place for this mode. Besides, there are several roads that are out of bounds for motorcycles. It also shows shortcut routes that might be inaccessible to cars but not for two-wheelers. Following its launch in India, Google will roll out the motorcycle mode in more countries in the months to come.
