There is a proposal to allow licence for driving gearless scooters after 16 years of age, The Parliament was informed on Thursday. A group of ministers have recommended a number of suggestions, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Pon Radhakrishnan, told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
"There is a proposal to allow licence after 16 years of age for gearless scooters below 100cc," the minister said. He also went on to say that the government plans to fit speed limiting devices in the two-wheelers.
"Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification wherein speed limiting device or speed limiting functions are mandated to be fitted in certain categories of transport vehicles having maximum pre-set speed of 80km per hour conforming to the standard," he added.
If this rule does pass its proposal stage, expect manufacturers to develop scooters directly targeted at this new market. At the moment, the TVS Scooty Pep Plus is the only scooter available below 100cc.
