- Youth aged between 16-18 years could soon ride e-scooters legally
- Currently this age group is limited to ride scooters with displacement upto 50cc
- This move will definitely help the e-scooter business
The government of India is planning to allow youth aged between 16 and 18 years ride e-scooters. This development was confirmed by Nitin Gadkari, union transport minister.
Currently, 16-18 aged youth are allowed to carry a licence and ride scooters with displacement 50cc or less. Unfortunately, there are no such scooters available in the Indian market, making this policy worthless. But it looks like the government wants to give e-scooter licence to these age bracket not just to make mobility easy for them but also to increase the e-scooter adoption.
There are quite a few e-scooter manufacturers in India. Companies like Okinawa, Yo Bykes and Hero Electric have been in this business since a few years now, with the last one being the market leader. There have been recent surge in EV companies setting up business in the country. There are start-ups like Ather Energy who have been studying the market so that it could provide a product that isn’t just economical but also practical and aspirational.
