Harley-Davidson India launched the Street 750 at Rs 4.1 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) during the 2014 Auto Expo. This price not only shocked certain premium manufacturers sharing the Auto Expo floor, but it also stunned the Indian consumers. Now, the same bike contributed 60 per cent of Harley’s sale in India for April 2014.
The iconic American manufacturer sold 361 bikes last month where the Street 750 contributed 210 units which is a very big number. The company sold 146 motorcycles in the same month last year. Harley-Davidson has surely hit the sweet spot by developing this bike for countries like India. Plus, manufacturing the Street 750 in India has given them the advantage of keeping the price very competitively. It was achieved by localising most of the spare parts and the company has confirmed to locally fabricate the fuel tanks and fenders which were earlier imported.
Harley-Davidson India has carefully understood the Indian market. They realised during their four years stint in India that their strength lies in their brand and if they could mix this with a very affordable product, India being a cost sensitive market, they would be able to taste success in no time. And honestly, they have. We won’t be surprised if the sales digit of the Street 750 reaches the four digit mark in the next few months.
