Harley-Davidson took the internet by storm yesterday by launching its smallest offering for India yet, the X440. The ex-showroom prices of the motorcycle start from Rs 2.29 lakh for the base Denim variant and they go up to Rs 2.69 lakh for the top-end S trim. Those who want to book the motorcycle will be able to do so starting today, 4 July, at 4.40pm, through Hero MotoCorp’s India website.
The X440 has been developed by Harley-Davidson in association with Hero MotoCorp. In fact, it will be manufactured locally in India and that is one of the reasons for its accessible pricing. The main rivals of the motorcycle in India include the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Honda Hness CB350, Jawa 42 2.1, and the Yezdi Roadster. Notably, all these bikes are more affordable than the X440 but the Harley justifies that with a larger displacement, more modern features and more premium components.
The Harley-Davidson X440 boasts a modern-retro styling inspired by the XR1200 which Harley used to sell until a few years back. While the standard variant sports a single-tone paint scheme, the upper two variants are adorned with dual-tone colours. Interestingly, the old-school design is complemented by modern features like full-LED lighting, a TFT console (Bluetooth in the top-spec trim), a USB charging port, and dual-channel ABS.
While the mid and top-spec trims ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, the base variant incorporates spoke wheels. Suspension duties are handled by USD forks and dual springs while braking is taken care of by a single disc at both ends. Powering the Harley-Davidson X440 is a 440cc, single-cylinder, oil and air-cooled engine with a two-valve setup that belts out a maximum output of 27bhp at 6,000rpm and 38Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm. This unit comes mated to a six-speed gearbox.
