Hero Mavrick 440 vs Harley-Davidson X440: key differences

The Hero Mavrick 440 has finally been revealed and this is their version of the Harley-Davidson X440. To reiterate, Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson have jointly developed the new 440 platform but they’ve taken different approaches to come up with their bikes. Here’s what separates these platform siblings.

Design

The obvious difference between the two bikes is seen in their design. The Hero Mavrick 440 is a roadster and its design is muscular and proportionate. You’ve got a round LED headlight that sits low, a beefy fuel tank with neatly integrated extensions and a slim rear end. It looks good and unlike anything we’ve seen in the segment.

The Harley-Davidson X440’s design language is similar to Harley's bigger bikes like the Nightster or the V-Rod. The tank, side panels and the rear fender add visual mass to the design, but some of us do feel the tail section could’ve been executed in a better manner. The Harley does cut a more imposing stance, largely contributed by its bigger front wheel and the shape of the fuel tank.

Hardware

Both motorcycles share the same frame but differ in the type of suspension employed. The Harley has the more premium suspension, with a USD fork and twin shock absorbers at the rear. The Hero Mavrick 440, on the other hand, has a right side up telescopic fork and twin shocks at the back.

The wheel sizes are also different on both bikes. In keeping with the roadster application of the Mavrick 440, the bike gets 17-inch wheels at both ends. The X440, meanwhile, has a 18-inch front, and 17-inch rear wheel, much like cruisers.

Going by the suspension and wheel sizes, both of these motorcycles should differ in the way they ride and handle.

Features

In terms of features they are pretty evenly matched with both bikes offering all-LED lights, dual-channel ABS and Bluetooth connectivity enabled instrument clusters. The Harley, however, has the more modern, colour TFT display as opposed to the simpler, LCD unit on the Hero.

Engine

Hero Mavrick 440 Engine From Left

As they are based on the same platform, these motorcycles share the same air and oil cooled engine. They have the same peak power, 27bhp at 6,000rpm but the Harley’s engine makes 38Nm at 4,000rpm while the Mavrick’s engine produces 36Nm at the same rpm.

Price

Prices of the Harley-Davidson begin at Rs 2.39 lakh and go up to Rs 2.79 lakh for the top-spec, ‘S’ variant. Hero will announce the price of the Mavrick 440 in February and deliveries will commence in April. The bike will significantly undercut the Harley-Davison and we expect to see a sub-Rs 2 lakh price sticker.
