Hero MotoCorp still leading the Indian two-wheeler industry

The Indian two-wheeler industry is considered one of the biggest in the world and also the fastest growing after China. With millions of sales each year, many manufacturers aim to be the best and take over the largest market share. Hero MotoCorp has been leading this pack since the last few years and ended in the number one position yet again in the last financial year.

Hero MotoCorp sold 6245,895 two wheelers in the last financial year as compared to 60,75,583 in April-March 2013 registering a single digit growth of 2.80 per cent. The second spot was taken by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India which registered an impressive growth of 35.11 per cent. The Japanese manufacturer sold a total of 37,21,935 units last financial year as compared to 27,54,584 units a year before that. HMSI is hoping to become the number one Indian two-wheeler manufacturer by 2015-2016. This looked quite possible before the 2014 Auto Expo. But Hero MotoCorp stunned everyone at this biennial event by showcasing a new range of some fantastic products. HMSI might have to redo their strategy and come up with something that is more than just an Activa or a new addition to the Dream series.

Third place has been taken by Bajaj Motorcycles who sold 34,22,416 units but registered a de-growth of 9 per cent. Blame HMSI and Hero MotoCorp here who took away their sales in the commuter segment. But with new range of Discovers, the Pune- based manufacturer might see a decent growth in the current fiscal year. Upcoming fully-faired Pulsars might result in additional market share in the respective segments.
