Hero MotoCorp is going to mark its entry into the European markets with the production version of the Leap hybrid scooter, by the end of next year. This was revealed by Mr. Pawan Munjal, the Vice Chairman, CEO and Managing Director of Hero MotoCorp, at the 2014 EICMA Motor Show in Milan, Italy.
The Hero Leap was first unveiled two years ago, though a near production-ready Leap SES version was showcased at this year’s Delhi Auto Expo. It is powered by an 8kW permanent magnet AC (PMAC) motor and a petrol-powered 124cc range extender engine.
Acquiring Eric Buell Racing (EBR) was one of Hero MotoCorp’s first steps which had hinted its intent of entering the European market. With the aim of making its presence felt in Europe, the company showcased a number of its products and concepts, including the HX250R and the Hastur 650, at the annual motorcycle show.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Mujal said, "Having already stamped our presence in Asia, Africa, Latin & Central America, we are now looking at stepping into the European market by the end of 2015 with our hybrid scooter Leap making its debut here. This is in line with our vision of making Hero a truly global brand in its range of quality products, scale of operations and geographical footprint.”
Since its split with long-time joint venture partner, Honda, Hero MotoCorp has been aggressively expanding into other global markets in Central and South America, Africa and Asia. While Hero MotoCorp already is the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, it is now aiming to expand its footprint to over 50 countries with 20 plus assembly facilities globally, by 2020.
