Hero unveils diesel-engined RNT motorcycle

Hero RNT

Hero has unveiled its diesel-engined motorcycle for the Indian market. The bike which looks to be targeted mainly at the rural markets gets a rather innovative flat design and many utilitarian accessories. Its other highlight is an electric motor connected to the front wheel which makes the bike a first-in-segment two-wheel-drive vehicle.

In terms of design, the bike has flat loading surfaces with strap bars as well as multi use folding side racks which have all been fitted with the sole purpose of utility. It also gets a small space between the handlebar assembly and the seat making it a pseudo step-thru thus combining best of both worlds. The RNT is powered by a 150cc diesel engine that produces 13.5bhp, 35Nm of torque and has been mated to a six-speed constant mesh transmission.

However, the diesel engine is not the only surprise. Hero says that the bike can be fitted with an optional turbocharger as well as a hub electric motor which sends additional power to the front wheels making this a two-wheel-drive motorcycle. The diesel motor when fitted with what the company calls an oversize generator can be used as secondary power source while the LED headlamp can be detached and used as a torch.

The bike is currently in a concept stage and is expected to see the light of day sometime next year. While we cannot comment on the price, we expect that with so much of utility value on the tap as well as Hero’s reputation in the rural areas, the RNT in its production form and name will be quite a hit for the Gurgaon-based motorcycle maker.
