Hero is working to develop a sub Rs 30 thousand motorcycle to gain a share in the mass-market. The cheapest motorcycle available from them is the HF Dawn, priced at Rs 39,470 (ex-showroom Mumbai).
They are likely targeting their market rival Bajaj who recently started selling the ‘most affordable motorcycle’ CT100B for Rs 32,668 (ex-showroom Mumbai).
Talking about Hero’s upcoming affordable motorcycle, Pawan Munjal, chairman and CEO of Hero Moto told TOI, "It has to be something path-breaking. Reducing (price) by Rs 1,000, or Rs 2,000 or Rs 4,000 is not something which is true innovation." Munjal said the new two-wheeler, which is in the conceptual stage at the moment, will need to be a volume churner as targeted population size is huge. "We understand this end of the market very well."
Hero is not the only one planning to enter this segment, Yamaha is working on a project called Indra (Innovative and new development based on responsible analysis). Yamaha had said they want to price the mass market motorcycle bike under Rs 33,000.
Only time will tell who comes out with the cheapest motorcycle in the India. At the moment, Bajaj holds the position by a large margin.
