Hero MotoCorp’s latest launch for the Indian two-wheeler market was the Xtreme 160R 4V. It’s the successor to the two-valve model and brought in a bunch of new bits with the four-valve setup. The Xtreme 160R 4V continues to rival the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V. So, we’ve put the two bikes against each other on paper and here’s the result.
Design
Even in its latest form, the Xtreme 160R looks pretty similar to the older model. Its LED headlight has been tweaked but the overall design remains largely the same and we aren’t complaining. The bike looks just as desirable now, as it did before. On the other hand, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V too evokes a sense of sportiness and looks aggressive. It too features an LED headlight and gets cuts and creases all over the bodywork. So, there’s no clear case of a winner regarding the design.
Features
Apart from LED illumination, the Xtreme 160R 4V gets a fully digital instrument console, smartphone connectivity, ABS, side-stand engine cut-off function, accident-related alerts, security functions, location of the vehicle, turn-by-turn navigation, locate a dealer, book a service, or call roadside assistance too. Meanwhile, the Apache gets an LED headlight, ride modes, Bluetooth connectivity with calls and SMS alerts and other readouts. However, it misses out on navigation.
Engine
Honda has powered the Xtreme 160R 4V with a new OBD2-compliant 163cc, single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled four-valve motor that makes 16.6bhp and 14.4Nm. It’s linked to a five-speed gearbox. On the other hand, the Apache RTR 160 4V is equipped with a 159cc single-cylinder mill linked to a five-speed gearbox, making 17.31bhp and 14.73Nm. It too gets a five-speed gearbox. The Apache makes more power than the Xtreme but it also weighs about 2kg more.
Hardware
The Xtreme 160R 4V gets USD front forks and a monoshock but only for the Pro model. The base and Connected variants still come with telescopic front forks. The Apache, on the other hand, rides on conventional telescopic front forks and a rear monoshock. The braking hardware for both motorcycles comprises a front and rear disc with ABS.
Price
The asking price for the Hero Xtreme 160R 4V starts from Rs. 1,27,300 for the base model, while the Connected and Pro versions are priced at Rs. 1,32,800 and Rs. 1,36,500 respectively. TVS has priced the Apache RTR 160 4V at Rs. 1,23,770 for the base mode and Rs. 1,27,270, Rs 1,30,570, Rs. 1,32,070 (all ex-showroom, Delhi) for the disc, Bluetooth disc and Special Edition models respectively.
