Honda has finally launched the Activa 5G in the Indian market with pricing starting at Rs 52,460. It faces direct competition from the TVS Jupiter and the Yamaha Fascino in the 110cc scooter market. We see how the updated Activa fares against its biggest rivals.
Design and features
In terms of design, the Yamaha Fascino gets the most distinctive styling. It sports a neo-retro design language with curvy lines running from the front fender to rear tail lamp. To boost its retro character, Yamaha has added bits of chrome to the bodywork and mirrors.
While the design of the Fascino is targeted to appeal to a younger audience, the Activa 5G and TVS Jupiter’s conservative styling would appeal to a wider audience. Honda has gone with the ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ approach with the Activa 5G. The scooter retains the design cues of the previous model although with touches of chrome to the front apron for a premium feel.
While the Activa gets an all-LED headlamp, the TVS Jupiter sports an LED tail lamp. On the other hand, the Yamaha Fascino misses out LED lighting for both ends. The Activa 5G sports a digital-analogue instrument cluster that gets ‘Eco mode’ lights and service-due indicator; only available on the DLX variant. Meanwhile, the TVS Jupiter and Yamaha Fascino get an analogue instrument cluster.
The Activa 5G and the TVS Jupiter get two hooks in the front. The Activa 5G gets a seat opener switch next to the ignition slot and a conventional underseat fuel filler cap. Meanwhile the Jupiter uses an external fuel filler cap that can be accessed through a key slot on the left side panel that also acts as a boot opener. The Fascino makes do with a single hook under the front end of the seat and a cubby hole on the front apron.
The TVS Jupiter and Yamaha Fascino ride on conventional telescopic forks for the front while the Activa 5G gets a leading link suspension. For the rear, all three get a monoshock along with alloy wheels as standard. While braking duties on the Jupiter are taken care of by drum brakes as standard, TVS also offers an optional disc brake. Whereas the Activa 5G gets a drum brake with CBS (Combi brake system) setup, the Fascino sports drum brakes without an option of disc brakes. The TVS Jupiter sports a 5-litre fuel tank capacity. The Yamaha Fascino sports a 5.2 litre fuel tank. The fuel tank capacity of the Activa 5G has not changed and it continues to get a larger 5.30 litre fuel tank.
Engine
The Honda Activa 5G continues with the same 109cc, single-cylinder engine that makes 8hp and 9Nm of torque. The Jupiter is also powered by a 109cc, single-cylinder engine that produces 8bhp and 8Nm of torque. While the Fascino is powered by a larger 113cc single-cylinder engine, it produces the least power output of 7bhp and 8.1Nm of torque.
Price
Pricing for the Honda Activa starts at Rs 52,460 for the standard variant and goes up to Rs 54,325 for the DLX version. Meanwhile, pricing for the TVS Jupiter starts at Rs 52,372 and goes up to Rs 58,187 for the Classic Edition. The standard Fascino is the priciest of the lot with a price tag of Rs 56,082.
