Honda Activa has added another feather in its cap by becoming the first scooter in the Indian market to cross the one crore unit sales milestone. Since it was launched here in 2001, the Activa has steadily increased its market presence to become the undisputed leader of this rapidly growing segment.
The Honda Activa currently enjoys a 59 per cent market share in the scooter segment, which means that every second scooter sold in the country is an Activa. Though the scooter started off with a humble sales figure of 55,000 units in its first year, the number has now grown to 21 lakh in just 14 years. Such is the popularity of the Activa that it manages to eclipse the Hero Splendor in the monthly sales numbers, every once in a while.
The popularity of the Activa made many other manufacturers sit up and take notice of this market space, which was considered to be a dying segment. By introducing an automatic transmission, Honda eliminated the drawbacks of the traditional scooter and improved its usability, thereby widening its access to a whole new range of audience. Despite the increase in competition, the Activa has easily managed to stay way ahead of the competition, making it the Japanese manufacturer’s biggest asset.
Commenting on this landmark, Mr Keita Muramatsu, president and CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. said, “This achievement is more significant since Activa has gained the trust of one crore happy families in India. From reactivating the scooter segment in India in 2001 to leading the Scooterization of industry today, Honda’s iconic Activa has changed the way Indians ride to fulfill their dreams. We thank our valued customers and families who have made Activa the most preferred choice of families for commuting in India.”
